Last week I was invited for the Bloggers’ meet regarding the official launch of SEAMO (South East Asian Mathematical Olympiad) in INDIA. India is the 13th nation to launch this Olympiad series for its children. Though I could not attend the meet due to travel distance that I had to cover to attend the meet but I had the privilege to share information about this great initiative with you all parents and students.
SEAMO originated from Singapore and was conceptualized and managed by noted mathematician & experts of Terry Chew Institute of Mathematical Olympiad (TCIMO). Established in 1991, TCIMO has been engaged in path breaking research in designing mathematical questions to assess a child’s inherent and problem solving skills. It encourages all categories of students to think on the solution approach to a problem.
SEAMO is an internationally acclaimed Mathematics Olympiad for students of Class V-XII aiming at all categories of students to assess their problem solving ability and discover their strengths and weaknesses. Last year, more than 40,000 students appeared in SEAMO across 12 Asian countries viz Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
With the sole purpose to offer a common platform for wide cross section of Indian students to assess their skills and to compete with international students of South East Asia, SEAMO will be held for the first time in India across 55 cities and in more than 100 test centers.
Mr. Terry Chew, Associate Executive Director, Program Manager at SEAMO said, “We are delighted to introduce our comprehensive Olympiad to the bright and young math enthusiasts of India. SEAMO is a first-of-its-kind platform that exposes students to in-depth, stimulating and interesting mathematical problems. It is my pleasure to welcome the students to partake in one of the most stimulating and creative exams in the south East.”
SEAMO Benefits for your children
• Early exposure to an International Olympiad (esp for Class V-IX) helps to nurture the mental and thinking ability of the students, which ultimately boosts their confidence.
• Relative evaluation, wherein students will be able to benchmark their performance w.r.t. others, through National Rank and International Rank.
• Performance Analysis report based on SEAMO performance will be a unique takeaway, unlike other Olympiads.
• More importantly, top 0.025% of participating students will win a Gold Plated Medal & a Certificate of Participation, the next 1% will get a Silver Plated Medal & a Certificate of Participation and the next 2% will get a Bronze Plated Medal & a Certificate of Participation. All remaining participating students will be presented with a Certificate of Participation.
SEAMO, India 2017: Registration is open till 31st July.
Alright, so that are some unique benefits that this Olympiad offers to students. I remember participating in different Olympiads during my school time and also can’t forget the difficulty level of those tests. But, the SEAMO exam structure is totally different. It has divided the difficulty level of total questions in three parts: Easy, Moderate and Difficult. Hence, it enables average students to enhance their thinking horizon in small parts at a time, allowing them to taste success and gain confidence to move on. The students can appear in SEAMO every year to compare their performance with the previous year. As someone has rightly said, “Practice makes a man perfect”.

Well, looking at the uniqueness of this Mathematical Olympiad and the numerous benefits that it provides for a student, I would have loved to send my daughter for this test but she is just two years old. But, I would love to see you guys to take this opportunity to appear for the test (if you are a student reading my post) / to encourage your child to appear for the test.
