Recently my dad gifted my daughter a slate and a packet of chalk sticks so that she can learn to hold and draw something using her imagination. My dad says using slate and chalk sticks in young age improves one’s hand-writing in future; I am not sure how true it is but I go by my dad’s opinion and will teach my kiddo to draw and practice writing using this. It’s fun to draw and rub on the slate; I remember as a kid, how we used to write and draw on the board. We also used to play some fun games on the chalk board and would practice good writing to impress our teachers. Those were really the good old days!
My daughter is 2 years old toddler who enjoys going to her playschool. There she plays with toys, learn rhymes and watches videos on the projector. I know in this era of technology, she would not get a chance to try her hands on the chalk board and chalk sticks in her school but at least at home, I can make sure that she experience what we experienced in our times. After all, it’s one of the ways to let your child free play and helps in improving his mental and physical development. My daughter loves drawing on the slate using chalk sticks and I also sit with her and write some alphabets and numbers to make her learn things while playing. It’s a win-win deal for both of us. She learns while playing.
While Googling about good quality chalk sticks, I came across a campaign initiated by Savlon (ITC’s leading hygiene brand) – ‘Savlon Swasth India Mission’. The purpose of this mission is to change the hygiene behavior of the children by doing engaging and fun activities in schools in villages and small towns, where children study using grey slates and chalk sticks. These children generally rub the slates using their hands and during their recess break, wash their hands with water only, hence leaving the hidden germs in hands.
So what Savlon has done is – they have come up with an easy solution to this widespread hygiene problem among children in schools. The brand has introduced an innovative product – ‘Savlon Healthy Hands Chalk Sticks’. These exceptional chalk sticks are filled with cleansers like soap to engage children in primary schools and stress on the importance of washing hands before eating. As soon as the hand smeared with chalk powder is placed under water, it turns into a cleanser like soap and generates lather. The chalk dust forming lather on washing with water is a unique experience that engages children and educates them on the importance of cleaning with cleansers.
The unique Chalk Sticks is a first of its kind initiative, in a series of on-ground activities being undertaken by Savlon Swasth India Mission. It is indeed a simple yet innovative solution to the hygiene problem among school children. Its uniqueness and the experience have been showcased in a short video. The video presents a glimpse of the world of these primary school children and their experience with the Savlon Healthy Hands Chalk Sticks.
We all know that school is the place where habits are formed and then it becomes a way of living life. Handwashing education and access to soap in schools can help improve attendance. Good handwashing early in life may also help improve child development. According to a research, handwashing can prevent about 30% of diarrhea-related illness and about 20% of respiratory infections (e.g., colds). So go and support this mission and the practice of handwashing for a healthy and progressive India.
