Q.1 Please tell us something about yourself and your blogging journey so far.
First of all, thanks a lot Neha for considering me for this one!
Software engineer by profession and blogger by passion is how introduce myself in one line. My name is Atul alias Atulmaharaj. Currently based out of Hyderabad, I’ve stayed at various cities in India including Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bangalore, Madgaon, Panchgani to name a few. I started blogging in 2012 and have come a long way since then. There’s an interesting story behind this, My professor for Communication Skills was a creative guy and asked us to make a class blog where we would post assignments based on which we were graded. That’s when I started my blog. You must be wondering such a sincere bachcha I am, took the assignment so seriously!
Q.2 What led you to take up blogging as a full-time career option?
Before I say about this, let me tell you that I’m not a full time blogger. Its something that I enjoy doing in my free time. During my days in Hostel, we were supposed to take up vocational courses. So I opted for web designing and hosting when I was in class 8. The faculty taking the course told me that we Indians always look for free stuff on the internet. Be it movies, songs, assignments etc. but what to do we give back to the Internet? And that was the foundation of my journey on the internet. I realized blogging was the best way to give back to the internet. People often search for places to eat, solutions to problems to name a few. So I decided to take this up and starting contributing. It’s my way of giving back to the community.
Q.3 How much money do you make through your blog and what techniques do you use to monetize your blog?
That’s a trivial question. I will stay away from the numbers though I can say that the cash flow cycle is going on. The earnings are sufficient to maintain the blog which was the first priority for me. As for the techniques, just like any other content publisher, ad networks, affiliate network are some of the sources. Apart from this, there are brand posts that I do. So yeah, that’s about the money part of it.
Q.4 What message would you like to give to new bloggers who want to take up blogging as a full-time career option?
The first and foremost thing I say to any newbie blogger is to never start a blog with the sole intention of earning money. Because I feel, blogging is all about your passion and interest. If you love something, you will do it good. And once you do it good, money will automatically start flowing. Would modify what Rancho from 3 idiots said “Paise ke peeche mat bhaago, blog karte raho, paisa jhak maarke peeche aayega…”Secondly I tell them to treat the blog as a plant. You need to shower it with posts frequently to reap the benefits in future and don’t let the blog die. And lastly don’t think that blogging is just about posting, it’s an organisation in itself. You are the CEO, CMO, CFO and the peon to. It’s not just about writing, it includes graphic editing, marketing p, analysis and what not. Blogging is a serious profession and many a times your motivation may take a toll. That’s the toughest period, when you wrote and not many people read, you tend to quot. That’s when you need to stay strong and continue.
Q.5 Where do you see the future of professional blogging in next 5 years?
Blogging AS we know is no more a hobby, it’s a profession. We have bloggers from various niches contributing to a business’s success. For me professional blogging will become an integral part of the marketing department. Influencer marketing is going to be huge. People will look up to their views on things which will be very critical to make the purchasing decision. And companies know that. Also apart from the expert opinions, consumers would love to hear what other consumers have to say. I hope that the brands take a serious note on this and respect the blogging community considering the way they treat bloggers.
