Q.1 Please tell us something about yourself and your blogging journey so far.
Hi readers of DigiMother, like you I love Neha and DigiMother for the simplicity and directness of the blog. Well, I am Menaka Bharathi a.k.a Simple Indian Mom. I am almost completing my doctorate in Agricultural Microbiology and am a mother of two lovely boys.
Simple Indian Mom is my brainchild started somewhere in 2007 when my first kid was born. I wanted to incorporate all the traditional Indian parenting values I learnt to my kid and began doing a lot of reading and researching on the same.
This led me to gain good amount of knowledge which I used for bringing harmony and happiness in my family and kids and started teaching others too. I have found the exact treasure of mind-ful parenting and Indian cultural practices and foods.
Now I have started my own organic super-foods (which I have done my doctorate on) production unit. I am marketing them under the brand SIM Organics. We are a start-up slowly growing.
Q.2 What led you to take up blogging as a full-time career option?
I was working with the Government Agricultural Department earlier and found it difficult to concentrate on what actually I loved – and that was my blog. I was taxing myself with my career, my blog and my family. Finally it was only in september 2016 that I decided I would begin my own company and work for myself.
Till 2016 – a long 9 years – my blog was a hobby and I had never considered SIM could be an earning option. I wanted to tell the world what I knew and I was getting some decent revenue too. In 2016, when I seriously took to blogging I was hit on the face with what I really missed all those years. There was such a boom and the market was really good.
Q.3 How much money do you make through your blog and what techniques do you use to monetize your blog?
I use adsense, flipkart, amazon and now sell my own products.
My greatest sources of income come from affiliates namely amazon and flipkart. I also earn through sponsored posts. I choose to post very few sponsored posts and only those which adhere strictly to my niche which I have laid strong foundations for.
I also sell my products, which is slowly growing. Being in the initial stage, I am doing all kinds of experiments to do better.
Q.4 What message would you like to give to new bloggers who want to take up blogging as a full-time career option?
- First learn what blogging actually is. There are numbers that matter and numbers that don’t – make sure to know exactly what these numbers are that you are targeting.
- Know who your audience are, are they having any problem you can solve, are they in need of some information you exclusively have or you are an expert in?
- Decide upon your niche and work towards it – be unique, work on YOUR strengths alone.
- Once you know your niche work on products you can sell (or make your readers buy) you cannot survive on blogging without selling anything.
- Learn at least basic SEO and SMO.
- Don’t rush, there is a lot of things that decide your success and the most important factor is YOU.
- DO NOT COPY any other successful person this may look like a great idea in the beginning but you need to know Google watches everything.
Q.5 Where do you see the future of professional blogging in next 5 years?
I think blogging is going towards a plateau now, we are overloaded with information and nothing is left uncovered. Unless you have something unique and helpful you are going to remain just another blogger.
Brands are now looking at bloggers as an easy and less expensive group to use for their promotions which sure is going to change in the coming years. Blogging is going to be very important for brand promotions, so plan well and try to get out of the sheep-herd, get known for something you really are and know well. Take all those extra courses required to become the voice of your brand.
Only those bloggers who have a loud unique voice are going to be loved by the media in the coming years so be prepared.
Blogging and websites have started becoming like corporate offices now and people are making them exactly the way they would do to any media – hence in the coming years we should be ready and competent enough to face them and compete with them.
If the above steps are taken I am sure blogging is the next big thing that is going to rock as an earning choice.
